Behind Viola Davis' 'Whimsical' Yet 'Devious' Hunger Games Look Inspired by Willy Wonka

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes costume designer Trish Summerville spoke with People Magazine about the concept for Viola Davis’ Dr. Gaul costume, “As soon as you put the costume and the hair on her, the wig and the makeup, she automatically started having this little laugh and the things she would do with her hands," she recalls. "It's a huge satisfaction when you can help an actor transform into being another character."

Trish says says the inspiration for Davis's look was something of a "Willy Wonka mad scientist, Dr. Frankenstein kind of vibe" — basically a "whimsical feel" with a "dark side to her that's devious."

"She has to have this jovial side where she draws you in, but then she is really terrifying at the same time," says Summerville.

Summerville and her team made "thousands" of costumes for the film, "It was a massive undertaking," she says. "We made buttons for the school uniforms that are the Capitol emblem, so that's 8,000 to 10,000 buttons you're making and casting. If you're going to have 200 or 500 students, you have to make two to three times that many costumes because you don't know people's sizes; if you have 500 background [actors], you need about 2,000 pairs of shoes to make that work for people."

She wanted the costumes for Davis, however, to "be much different than" what other characters wore, using "a lot of color" to make her "always stand out."

About those standout "shiny latex gloves," the costume designer says she figured Dr. Gaul keeps her hands covered because "her hands are destroyed from all the experiments she works on. I always wanted to have her hands covered in every scene," says Summerville. "And having this red-and-white lab coat, we'd washed it so it appears to have this veining, which goes to veins in the body and blood and the washing down of blood on her lab coat."

Says Summerville, "She was just so lovely and gracious. You give her these tools and then she turns it into something bigger than life. She's just this cool, amazing, wonderful, warm and loving person."

The Hunger Games Stage Adaptation Heading to London's West End Fall 2024

The Hunger Games first ever stage adaptation is heading to London's West End in Fall 2024. Suzanne Collins is collaborating on the project, and the show will be based on the first book, according to a press release today.

Conor McPherson, an Olivier Award-winning Irish playwright, has adapted Collins' novel and the movie into the upcoming theatrical production directed by Matthew Dunster.

"In a world where the truth itself seems increasingly up for grabs, The Hunger Games beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance, and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially," McPherson said in the statement. "This is turbo-charged storytelling of the highest order, and I'm hugely excited to bring it to a new generation of theatergoers and Suzanne Collins' longstanding and devoted fans."

Collins said she was "very excited to collaborate with the amazing team" for the production.

No word on casting the adaptation, which will highlight The Hunger Games reluctant hero Katniss Everdeen, made famous by Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen (not to mention Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, among others).

Dunster said in the release that McPherson's play honors "the voice of Katniss Everdeen so rigorously." The play will follow the 24 young tributes pitted against each other in a televised battle for their lives by the ruthless Capitol and the following Katniss-inspired rebellion.

"This is theatre. It's The Hunger Games in the theatre," Dunster said in the release.

New Bonus Footage from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

We've finally got the official look at the bonus footage from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes featured at the re-release of The Hunger Games in theaters this week!

In this extended first look at the new film featuring new footage plus Rachel Zegler's rendition of The Hanging Tree, director Francis Lawrence explains how the origin story depicts a young Coriolanus Snow being "groomed to become the man he becomes."

Producer Nina Jacobson says in the clip, "Snow's never met anybody like her [Lucy Gray]. That romance between them makes Snow question everything he believes."

The clip also showcases Zegler's performance of The Hanging Tree, a song Jennifer Lawrence sang in 2014's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 that made its way to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It's just one of several songs from the book that Zegler sings in the new film.

Composer James Newton Howard says, "Hanging Tree is back in a completely different iteration and treatment." Adds director Francis, "Here, we see Lucy Gray coming up with it for the first time."

Dave Cobb is the film's executive music producer, which features tunes inspired by British Isles music and Southern music mashed together for the dystopian setting.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is in theaters on November 17. Rachel Zegler's "The Hanging Tree" single is available Friday, October 20th
