Sam Claflin on The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence & Social Media in The Guardian

Sam Claflin is featured in a new fashion shoot and interview with The Guardian. In the interview Sam touched on everything from filming The Hunger Games movies to social media and Jennifer Lawrence's fame.

On Mockingjay Part 2:

"Yeah, we had a refresher screening the other day, which was helpful. Before that I couldn’t really remember who I played or what I said,” he jokes. “But I think it’s a great climax to the series. It feels like the end of an era. I was sad to see it end, but also happy."

On filming The Hunger Games movies:

"It was a bit like being on holiday with your friends. A lot of the time I was just running around Hawaii with Jen and Josh [Hutcherson] and Lynn Cohen."

On the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman:

“I probably shouldn’t talk about it much,” says Claflin. “But it hit us all very hard. It was very unexpected, very sad. He was not only a hero to millions, but a personal hero of mine. The way he did something with every role. It’s so upsetting that you’ll never see him in a new film.”

On the loneliness of filming:

“I’ve definitely experienced the loneliness of the job. During the first Hunger Games we were out in Atlanta for six months. I was in a hotel, and all I had for company was a box set of Friends. In a way it was helpful that I had to be in such good shape: for months my routine went gym-chicken-bed-gym-chicken-bed-work, repeat.”

On his casting as Finnick Odair:

“You read the books and my character’s meant to look like a kind of Greek god. I wouldn’t have cast me: a pale, English, overweight, stubbled kid. I like a beer and a burger. I got nominated for a ‘Best topless scene’ against Zac Efron. I mean, how am I going to compete with Zac Efron?”

On Jennifer Lawrence and social media:

Jen, bless her, puts up with a lot. It’s frightening to see that kind of thing, the idea that you can’t have a private life. I keep a Twitter and Instagram page because I don’t want to invite people into my world too much. It’s my way of letting the fans think they are seeing my real life, but in reality I’m pushing them away.”

On social media and his responsibility to his younger fans:

“A lot of my followers are at an age where they aren’t able to drink or get tattoos or anything, and there’s a duty to them that lots of people don’t pay attention to. For example I’m going to a mate’s house tonight, but I’m not going to tweet pictures of myself drunk. The music industry is so messed up – look at someone like Miley Cyrus, who is just sex and drugs. The thought that one day my kid might look up to someone like that is…” he trails off and shakes his head.

On being thought of as a heartthrob:

“I hate being offered heart-throb after heart-throb,” he says, only half-joking. “It is something that stresses me out about the industry that because you’ve done one part you can’t do any others – you want to say: ‘I act, you know. I can pretend.’

Sam Claflin Says The Lizard Mutt Scene in Mockingjay Part 2 Was the "Hardest day of work I’ve ever done"

Sam Claflin is InStyle UK's Man of Style for November. In the article he has a bit to say about Mockingjay Part 2 and a very important scene in the film for his character Finnick Odair. *SPOILERS* If you haven't read Mockingjay Part 2 Do NoT PROCEED! Sam also talks about his training, career to date, and the reason he’s not so keen on selfies.

So, Sam, let’s cut to the chase. As anyone who has read the trilogy of books knows, in the next instalment of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 [out this month]  your character gets “decapitated by a lizard muttation.” How do you even begin to prepare for that?

gif by leaveatrail.tumblr.com
That was the hardest day of work I’ve ever done. I was continually fighting, killing one stunt guy after another, and all for a grizzly end.

But that’s why one goes into acting, right? The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.

Weirdly, yes. I was very sporty growing up, and through drama school I focussed more on fight choreography and stage combat and less on Shakespeare. My dad and I enjoyed watching action films: all the Bonds, Braveheart, Gladiator. Lots of epic historical films. But The Goonies was and is my favourite movie.

In your next film, the heartstring-tugger Me Before You, you play Will Traynor, a paralyzed man. You’re also in talks to play Robin Friday, an English soccer player who died at age 38. Even Finnick, though superheroic, is human in the end. You seem attracted to the mortal in an age when so many actors are donning capes and masks.

I’m open-minded. If the right script came along, I would happily jump aboard. But the main thing is, I want to be challenged in new ways & work with interesting people. I’m not in a rush to win an Oscar or even try to go down that route.

You’ve got a bit of a tween fan base. Do you feel pressure to act in a certain way? Is it something you discuss with your wife, who is also an actress?

I suppose I have a certain following that my wife, Laura [Haddock], doesn’t. But in general, she’s much more publicly scrutinized – for everything from how she behaves to what she wears – than I am. As we’re both actors, we don’t talk much about it. To us, it’s just normal. As for my fans, I’m respectful of the age group that’s interested in me. I try not to swear too much, and, well…it’s a difficult balance. I like to drink, and I have a tattoo, but I keep it quiet. I don’t want kids saying, “He’s got one, so I’ll get one.”

What’s your tattoo of?

It’s a red and black swallow on my left inner bicep.

Who did you look up to as a kid?

That’s easy – David Beckham. I’ve played football every day of my life.

Oh, he has a ton of tattoos. You guys could bond over that. Have you met him?

No. I was at a party and he was there, but I was too nervous to approach him. It’s the second time I’ve really been quite speechless and giddy and childish. I hate the selfie things, but I saw Paul Rudd in a hotel in New York, and I have a secret man crush on him. I wanted to take a picture with him, but I said to myself, “I can’t stoop to that level”. I wish I had, though. I was telling my wife, who knows I love him, that I saw him and she said “Prove it,” and I couldn’t.

What’s your issue with selfies?

I was in the gym the other day when these two women arrived in their gym gear. After taking 10 minutes’ worth of selfies in front of the mirror, they went to every machine in turn and took more, with that little duck face people pull. It really bothered me. Their workout consisted of them taking photos of themselves on equipment. It’s a vanity the world has taken on. I don’t feel like I’ve worked out unless I’m dripping with sweat and probably looking my worst. Why do people want to see that? I think it’s part of a larger issue of how much we rely on computers. Even in my work, I worry about how much we rely on CGI. Animation is getting so good that soon we’ll just be voices, then manufactured voices and out of a job.

Would you prefer to be in another era, doing the lo-fi epics Errol Flynn did?

Yeah, I think I would. They literally slap their thighs and the music comes in at exactly the right moment. But I don’t know if people back then took those action films seriously.

Is being taken seriously a big concern?

It’s quite low down [laughs]. I think there are parts of me that would like to be taken seriously. But a lot of roles are offered to someone who’s better or more handsome.

Can anyone really be more handsome, Sam?

There’s a Hollywood hierarchy, and the same parts are offered to the same people. There’s a pool, and I’m on the outskirts trying to get in. I’m very lucky though. I have friends who would happily do the script I’ve just said no to. It’s a first world problem, but it is a problem I’m having.

Special thanks to SamClaflinFans and @captainswanftw for the article and photos.

#THGBFF - Spotlight on Finnick And Mags

Edit by ennobaria.tumblr.comFriend /frend/

1. a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection.

During #THGBFF week we've been focusing on friendship. Real life friendships and The Hunger Games cast and characters' friendship. One of my favorite character relationships is the one between Finnick and Mags. Both from District 4 - Mags, a victor from a much earlier hunger games, was Finnick's mentor during the 65th hunger games in which Finnick won at the age of 14. From there, they formed a bond. Mags was like family to Finnick.

Mags volunteered for Finnick's love Annie Cresta in the 75th hunger games.

And even though Finnick had a way of being outwardly suave and nonchalant to most people, he loved Mags so much. "She basically raised him," as Haymitch pointed out in Catching Fire. "If he tries to protect her in any way, it exposes him. " and yet, protect Mags he did, carrying her through the arena most of the time.

"Well, I can't leave Mags behind. She's one of the few people who actually likes me."

Mags made the ultimate sacrifice in the deadly fog section of the arena, not only for Finnick but for Katniss, Peeta, and the rebellion. Finnick mourned her through the night.

As Johanna put it after Mags' death,

"She was half his family."

RIP Mags.

Sam Claflin Talks 'Mockingjay Part 2' With Josh Horowitz

Josh Horowitz recently interviewed Sam Claflin while he was promoting Love, Rosie, and they touched on a bunch of subjects including a pivotal scene in Mockingjay Part 2.  Listen to the latest episode of Happy, Sad, Confused with Josh Horowitz.

Sam talks about Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson at about the 25:00 mark:

There are moments of both [freaking out and enjoying being with very famous actors]. I suppose walking into Jennifer Lawrence's apartment for the first time during Catching Fire and seeing Woody [Harrelson] wearing a ladies crop top, that I thought was HIS top. I thought, 'This looks about right for how I imagined Woody Harrelson to be, him with a tasseled crop top.' I thought, 'Yeah, that's totally normal, I think.'

Sam talks about Liam Hemsworth and Woody (again) around the 32:00 mark.

I literally LOVE Woody. I am in love with that man. He's the nicest, most gentle humanitarian you'll ever meet. He's just so cool."

On how life changed after being cast as Finnick Odair in Catching Fire:

I think now, moreso that ever, I do occasionally get noticed, or people give me a dirty look. I don't know if it's that I have that face that people want to punch, or that I look reasonably familiar. [Laughs] You look a bit like that guy. But, no, can't be, too ugly. It has definitely catapulted my career, in that sense. It's allowed me to walk into some bigger rooms and meet some bigger people. But at the same time I definitely feel like I live my life like I always have. I don't take anything for granted, I'm very appreciative to be in my position, and gracious. Yeah. I still feel very lucky to be here. I definitely think it's only a matter of time before people realize I can't act. [laughs] But long may it continue in the mean time. I'm going to make the most of it while I can!

*SPOILER ALERT* Don't read further (or listen part the 34:00 mark on the audio) if you want to be spoiler free about Mockingjay Part 2!

The quick bit about Mockingjay Part 2 is at about the 34:38 mark. Sam says of filming a certain VERY important scene in the film:

It was the worst day of filming I have ever done in my life. I think I actually got hooked up to oxygen tanks because I was so, uh, it was so… It’s awesome. I don’t wanna talk too much about it but it was a really hard day of work for me. Brutal. It was just me, y’know, all day. I don't want to talk too much about it because, obviously, it's not out yet. But I'd like to think this whole last segment, the ending, the conclusion to this franchise won't disappoint people. It's bigger, yeah, I'm VERY excited.

Sam Clalfin on 'Mockingjay Part 2,' Freedom of Speech and 'Me Before You'

Sam Claflin spoke with Red Carpet News TV at the Bafta Award nominations and had a bit to say about The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 around the 2:30 mark.

It was kind of disheartening to hear him talk about "distancing himself" from The Hunger Games at first, but he brought it back around by the end of the segment.
