New Interview With Francis Lawrence Teases a Surprise For Fans at The End of 'Mockingjay Part 2'
The Hunger Games fandom has been freaking out over a recent interview with Mockingjay Part 2 director Francis Lawrence that was published in the Mexican newspaper Informador. In the interview, Francis says Mockingjay Part 2 will be a "very satisfying and emotional ending" to the franchise. But what everyone is going crazy over is that Francis teases a "surprise" at the end, specifically for fans. We've translated the article from Spanish for you.
"After what the characters have been through, you want to end with a sense of hope but due to the themes we've explored in the films, the consequences of violence and war, they change forever. Even if there is hope, they've suffered permanent damage, '' said the director.
Lawrence insisted, however, despite the lack of a traditionally happy ending, it will be ''the most satisfying of all the films (in the series) because the story comes to a conclusion'' and he hopes that it will match the expectations of the story's fans.
The director has spent more than three and a half years dedicated full-time to The Hunger Games franchise, allowing him to establish communication with the fans and listen to their requests. ''Fans want us to include specific phrases of the book, certain scenes, '' said the director, who noted that one of the fans' wishes is to see an on-screen romantic encounter between Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), characters who pretend an awkward affair.
Without giving specifics, the director said that Mockingjay Part 2 has, ''a surprise that's not in the book'' and has added it specifically for the fans. ''It's towards the end of the film,'' he said.

I'm hoping for it to be Hayffie related!
I'm with Jessie--I'm praying for the confirmation of Hayffie!! 8''D I need that more than Spongebob needs water in the treedome!
I ship Everlark, of course, but aside from being more explicit about how they grow together romantically, I'm not sure how much more we can ask in that regard. The entire ending was Everlark; the "intimacy" everyone's going nuts over is already implied by the fact that they have two children. I could see there being a little wedding scene in the epilogue. But more than anything I want to see Effie move to 12 (and marry Haymitch and make beautiful babies with him...!) x'-} Not to mention finding out more about what happens to Gale, Johanna, Mrs. Everdeen, and Annie & son...plus the country as a whole. There's just so very much space for filling in and fleshing out.
But just...the way Francis speaks of the film ending gives me so much hope. It sounds perfect. What he said there is right in alignment with my own thoughts.
I also really hope that it's the reveal of a relationship between Effie and Haymitch. I don't think anything they change re: Katniss and Peeta will add very much, but something a lot of fans have really wanted to see is Hayffie. It's such a great idea for a romantic subplot. I think we've all imagined what it must have been like for them to be mentor and escort together year after year after year and forming this secret relationship that they hide from the Capitol by bickering at each other.
I also think that a lot of Effie's behavior is just an act and that she probably realized how horrible the Games are during her first Reaping in D12. Haymitch probably coached her into realizing that she had to play along to survive, just like people in the districts do, like all the Victors do, and that's how they started falling in love. They had only each other to share the pain of the Games with every year.
I do think another option might be possible. In Part 1 and in some stills I've seen in Part 2, there are physical contact moments between Gale and Cressida. I wonder if a relationship developing between them might be the reveal. Cressida doesn't strike me as a woman who would want to go back to a life in the Capitol after the war. And we already know that Gale goes out to put down skirmishes with Peacekeeper resistance in some of the districts and eventually gets a job in D2. I can see Cressida joining him there rather than returning to the Capitol. It leaves the triangle love story fulfilled for each character since Gale loses Katniss but would gain Cressida. It's not what I would want, but I could see this happening.
Gressida is also totally possible, although I don't think it's nearly as "in demand" as Hayffie, which seems to be incredibly obvious by now...so I wouldn't think he'd have been referring to that. Still, it would make me happy. At least we'd know that Gale isn't on his own, and he would get a consolation prize of sorts. xD I was basically picturing her and the other surviving squad members working for Paylor & Plutarch or something, but there's no reason Cress couldn't go with Gale. Speaking of that, I've also been fantasizing about Plutarch offering Effie something to do, and her telling him that she'll need to be able to do it from D12 because--as he'd reminded her--her "days in the Capitol are over." ;) (And then she glances at Haymitch and asks, "I think...?" He smiles, nods, gives her a hug...maybe even a kiss...x3)
I've got a great feeling about Hayffie.
And yeah, I don't buy for a moment that Effie is actually the blissful bimbo she initially appears. My interpretation of her is based on the text, subtext, and films together...and to me, the two of them are the most complex, fascinating people and partners in the story. I've really fallen for them, and I REALLY want to see them both utilized to their full potentials in the film--culminating in the fulfillment of their relationship. They so much need and deserve to be together properly after all they've gone through.
