The Hunger Games and Jennifer Lawrence have both been nominated in the 39th Annual Saturn Awards. The Hunger Games is nominated for Best Science Fiction Film and Jennifer is up for Best Actress.
The Saturn Awards are presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. The non-profit organization was founded in 1972 by Dr. Donald A. Reed. His goal was to find an outlet to honor and recognize genre entertainment often overlooked by mainstream awards organizations. The Saturn Awards is considered the premier award for the entertainment they dub “exaggerated and/or enhanced reality”.
This year’s 39th Annual Saturn Awards is slated to take place in June. Membership in the Academy is open to the public - you can join! Please visit the Academy’s website for more info and a listing of this year’s nominations, www.saturnawards.org.
Jennifer Lawrence sat down with Katie Couric at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon back on 2/4/13 to discuss her nomination for Katie's Date With Oscar Show. Jennifer shows up at the beginning and very end of the video.
Catching Fire Director pf Photography, Jo Willems, spoke with Belgium's De Standaard about the movie back in January. We've translated the article from Dutch so some sections are slightly modified from the original HERE.
BRUSSELS - He is probably the most famous Belgian in Hollywood, but to us he is a complete mystery. Jo Willems determines the look of the sequel to 'The Hunger Games', the film that raked it in at the box office . "I had underestimated the pressure. But once I saw the first images, I knew it was right. "
Jo Willems is not just a cameraman: he is the "director of photography", or simply DOP, of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire . "Together with the director I determine the look and feel of the film," says Willems from his home in LA. "My main working tool is light. Then, the lenses and camera angles. During this time in the process I own no camera. "
Willems is filming of the second book in the wildly popular Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. In the sci-fi books, children fight each other in duels to the death. The first film released last year made as much as $ 685 million plus. "I've already rejected major projects because it did not feel right, but here I only had about a minute of doubt," says Willems. "I liked the previous movie really well and wanted to work with Francis." Then he talks about Francis Lawrence, the director who takes the reins from Gary Ross for the upcoming Hunger Games movies.
"Yes I had weak knees, those first days. There I was, on the set of a hugely expensive project. I had underestimated the pressure. But once I saw the first images, I knew that I could relax. "
Star struck
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will have a different appearance than the first film with Jo Willems as DOP. "There is more camera work on the shoulder, making the images seem more aggressive. For Francis and me it was a foregone conclusion that we wanted to shoot the movie on film. Digital is clean and sterile, real film has more soul and emotion. The story is set in a distant future, it had to look as real and authentic as possible. "
Willems is a big fan of the work of the Dardenne brothers. "Raw and realistic. Though I'm not going that far, this is Hollywood, it is my job to make the actresses look as beautiful as possible. "
A new director and a new DOP but the second film is still has the same lead actress: Jennifer Lawrence, only 22 and already one of the biggest stars in the U.S.. "I was very star struck at first, she has a very commanding presence. But she is so sweet and normal it passed quickly. I scored with my nine-year-old daughter: when she visited me on the set, she met Jennifer. I'm the coolest dad in the world. "
It is not easy for Willems on set. They've been working for six months on the film. 14-hour days and six to seven day weeks are no exception. "It's been tough," says Willems. "But we wanted to wrap for Christmas. Luckily my wife and two daughters occasionally come to visit, because this kind of shoot is detrimental to your family life."
Nostalgia
Willems began his career by shooting music videos in London. Justin Timberlake to Prince, Willems shot them all. In 2003 he got his first break in Hollywood: the low-budget film Hard Candy . 'I had done several shorts with the director, David Slade, when he hired me for his film debut. We had only 18 days of shooting and a budget of less than $1 million: nothing in Hollywood. But the film was a success. "
That got the ball rolling. Today Willems has eight films to his credit, with The Hunger Games culminating. "I never had a real mentor. I worked hard, seized the right opportunities and a little luck. Of course I still have dreams, but a lot is coming at me. It's fun to your work in your profession at the highest level. "
Have a listen to Jennifer Lawrence's telephone interview with WFPL Louisville's Joseph Lord. She talks about the Oscars, talk show anxiety and the brutal paparazzi.
From WFPL:
She now deals with the toils of stardom. The photographers hounding her. The gossip magazines guessing at her personal life. It's even followed to her hometown. Near the holidays, a newspaper item revolved around her shopping in Louisville for bedding.
"I think it's gross," she said. Later she adds:
"I was going to buy groceries last weekend and there was this new chain of paparazzi who just carry a video camera while they're taking pictures of you—and they just video you and they start making fun of you to try to make you mad to get a reaction, so they can sell it. Like what you do to monkeys in the zoo, when you just bang on the glass to try to make them mad to get a reaction.
"It just hurts your feelings, because you're like, 'Dude, I just want to just buy some groceries and you're making fun of me with a camera in my face.' So I think it's really gross. And it makes me feel like people don't expect me to be a human anymore."
The other aspect of stardom are talk shows—and Lawrence has been in high demand on the late night circuit.
Perhaps one reason is her penchant for being candid. She told Jay Leno—in vivid detail—about an encounter with an older stripper, for example.
These interviews, I tell her, seem to be well-received. They're reliably written about by every entertainment website, rarely in a negative way.
"That's good," she said. "It's only a matter of time."
Is saying the wrong thing a worry before going on to these shows?
"While I'm talking I'm worried about it," Lawrence said. "But I'm just like, you can't take it so seriously forever. I mean, like, it's a job. I guess the same anxiety where, like, I do a red carpet and at night I'm laying in bed and I just get that anxiety and I'm like, 'Oh God, did I say something—did I offend somebody? It's like high school."
More to Come
Once the awards season ends on Feb. 24, Lawrence will get back to work.
The second part of The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, has a few more days of filming to go. This fall, she'll star again alongside Bradley Cooper in Serena. Soon, she'll begin filming the follow-up to 2011's X-Men: First Class.
She rarely gets back to Louisville, but she's taken care to thank her family when accepting awards such as the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy. Her parents still have their home in Louisville. Her brothers, Ben and Blaine, still live and work in town.
They all talk frequently, she said. About their jobs, about her job.
"I wouldn't be anywhere without my family," she said.
Jennifer Lawrence graced the cover of The Wrap magazine's last OscarWrap issue for the 2013 season. She also let them shoot some behind-the-scenes video of photographer Patrick Fraser's cover shoot. You can see a few quick peeks of Jen's stylist, Mark Townsend fluffing her hair!
From The Wrap OscarWrap cover story:
On The Hunger Games:
Lawrence’s career has seemingly run on two parallel tracks: indies like “Silver Linings,” “Winter’s Bone” and “The Burning Plain” on one side, franchises like “The X-Men” and “The Hunger Games” on the other. The franchise side brings her the $10 million paydays, but the indie side is clearly where her heart lies.
“I had done indies before ‘Winter’s Bone,’” she said, “but that was the first time I could really identify that feeling of being freezing cold and on your 18th hour of free overtime, and everybody else was doing the same thing, and we were all there for the passion of what we were making. That is a feeling that you’ll never get on a studio movie. You’ll get a really nice trailer, but you’ll never get that bond with people. That is only on indies, and I long for that every day.”
Yet she’s going back to her final nine days of shooting on the second “Hunger Games” movie right after the Oscars, and then she’s doing another “X-Men” film. “The first ‘X-Men,’ I was excited to see what a giant studio film would be like,“ she said. “It seemed like it might be fun, and it was. With ‘Hunger Games,’ I loved it despite its size. I loved the script and the books and I loved everybody involved in it.
I didn’t like how big it was, and I did not want to be in another franchise. But I don’t regret saying yes, which kind of surprises me. Because I fully expected to.”

Josh Hutcherson took part in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Basketball Game last night (2/15/13) in Houston, TX. Josh McSporty-pants was actually the lead scorer for his team at half time! Go Josh! Go Josh!
From NBA.com: Actor Josh Hutcherson of "The Hunger Games" was perhaps the most animated player on the floor and had 11 points, while sinking three 3-pointers. He was the only player to connect from downtown. He also managed two air balls from long range among his seven attempts.
