Francis Lawrence on 'Mockingjay Part 1' in Sci Fi Magazine

Sci Fi Magazine's Tara Bennett interviewed Mockingjay Part 1 director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson for a really interesting feature in the December issue. The entire team has been SO tight-lipped about MJ1, this is probably the most anyone has gotten out of either of them about the film so far.

Francis Lawrence on their altered approach to Katniss' vulnerability in Mockingjay Part 1:

We had already been shooting for about five weeks when Catching Fire was released, and you could see and feel the reaction people had to the end of the movie. It affected our approach to her character and her state of mind. Although she is damaged, it's about modulating the right kind of damage so you still have some of that fierce determination, anger, and suspicion. It's balancing all of that with fragility because there's not much fragility in that look at the end of Catching Fire, so it was about finding the nuance of her damagedness. I have to say Part 1 was probably one of the most complex movies I've done in terms of tracking a character's emotional state. It's so specific, and you have to be so careful not to go down the wrong path. It would be so easy for the fine tuning of the performance to go off - not because of anybody's fault - but it's literally making the right choices to go down the right path. But I think Jen did a great job and I'm really pleased.

Lawrence on Suzanne Collins' complete approval and participation in any changes they made to the Mockingjay narrative:

We had to do a lot of Coin creation with Suzanne, the writer, and also with Julianne Moore. [Suzanne] is filled with tons of back story on people and mythological elements, so there's so much information. While I was shooting Catching Fire, she and I would sit down on weekends and go through [Mockingjay]. We broke out the book together and she wrote outlines while working with Peter Craig, who did the majority of work on the scripts. She's always up for the expansion, which is fun, and I think she gets a kick out of imagining things that are happening alongside the books."

Lawrence is careful what he reveals about how much we'll see of Peeta and Johanna in The Capitol:

We played around a little bit with how much we see of what's happening to them. I think we've landed on something that feels right to me. We definitely shot more than we used.

He's also - obviously - not going to give up where that MJ1 & MJ 2 split will happen but says:

[Both films] say something different and that's one of the reasons that the split works. I think they are two distinct stories within a larger story so thematically, each one's a little different. It was about figuring out where that end is for Part 1 that tells the story properly. That gives us a range and, within that range, we played around with where exactly it is, and for what effect, but I'm really happy with the way Part 1 ends.

There's SO much more in the article, including what Nina Jacobson has to say, so be sure to go and pick up a copy! The December issue of Sci Fi Magazine is on newsstands now. There is no digital issue avaialble for Sci Fi - we found ours at Barnes and Noble.

Sam Claflin Talks Finnick Odair & 'Mockingjay Part 1' at the Rome Film Festival

Sam Claflin was at the Rome Film Festival today to support his new movie, Love Rosie. He was interviewed on the red carpet and had some things to say about Finnick Odair and Mockingjay Part 1.

"Lots to expect. If you're a big fan of the franchise this continues on and in that sense it's exciting. But, it delves deeper into the world of The Capitol and Panem and all the characters are in a very, very dark place when the film starts. And it has a much more emotional punch, so look for some tears. I hope people enjoy it as much as I did. "

Here are some photos from the red carpet and photocall thanks to our friends at Sam Claflin fans. Check them out for even MORE pics from the event - I don't think they missed a photo!

'Mockingjay Part 1' Score to Be Released Nov 24 Including Jennifer Lawrence Acapella Piece

The following is *spoilery* so heads up if you want to be completely surprised by Mockingjay Part 1, the Score, and a major element from the film.

An industry newsletter from Universal Music Group has hit the web today, including some awesome details on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Score. The score is to be released on November 24th.

James Newton Howard is the score composer for this upcoming score soundtrack for The Hunger Games Score: Mockingjay Part 1. Howard has previously been the score composer for The Hunger Games: Original Motion Picture Score and The Hunger Games Catching Fire: Original Motion Picture Score. The score features an a capella piece performed by Jennifer Lawrence. The melody was written by The Lumineers. In the film, "The Hanging Tree" starts as an a capella performance by Katniss (Jen Lawrence). She is joined first by birds (Mockingjays), then groups of rebels as the song morphs more into score. James adds choir and orchestra and it builds to an amazing crescendo with an enormous action shot. It's a huge musical moment on the film. It also appears as second end title spot, after "Yellow Flicker Beat."

This newsletter is the same place we found out about the Lorde music video for "Yellow Flicker Beat" (it was supposed to be released yesterday - but wasn't). So, things ARE clearly subject to change. But Nina Jacobson has already commented similarly on The Hanging Tree scene in Mockingjay Part 1 in the filmmaker roundtable inside the first issue of The Hunger Games Exclusive:

I'm excited about what Francis Lawrence and [screenwriter] Peter Craig dreamed up for 'The Hanging Tree.' [They] came up with an incredible way of turning a powerful moment in the book into great big cinema."

Thanks SO much to our friends at QuarterQuell.org for the tip!

New Still of Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket in 'Mockingjay Part 1'

Effie still courtesy effiefuckingtrinket.tumblr.com

There's a new - and FABULOUS - still of Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket in Mockingjay Part 1 in the November issue of Elle Magazine (US version). Elizabeth is featured in Elle's Women in Hollywood issue, where Liz talks about career highs AND lows:

On if she ever had a career low: “There were a couple of auditions…one of them for a slasher film. I was going to be naked and get my neck slashed in a bathtub. I was like, I might be broke right now, but I’ll figure out another way to pay the rent.”

Thanks to ElizabethBanksFans for discovering the beauty that is this new still first, and to effiefuckingtrinket on tumblr for the gorgeous HQ version!
